We need to raise £150,000 by 7 July to save New Internationalist from closure and continue to publish our unique global justice journalism.
For more than 50 years, New Internationalist has dedicated itself to platforming voices from the majority world, providing a vital alternative to mainstream media. This has been NI’s mission from the start: to bring to life the people, ideas and movements fighting for global justice.
However, the world is changing. Our information sphere is being rebuilt by tech oligarchs and far-right politicians intent on upholding the very power structures we have fought so hard against. In this age of media manipulation, our kind of compassionate and fiercely independent journalism is needed now more than ever.
It is at this critical moment that New Internationalist is facing the very real possibility of being forced to cease publication.
In recent years, our costs have soared, while at the same time readers are less able to pay for journalism. AI and changing social media algorithms have impacted traffic to our website, and grants are harder to come by as funders shift priorities. We have pushed through so many disasters over the years — a worldwide pandemic, a cost-of-living crisis — yet, without time to pause between them, the tide has just kept coming.
New Internationalist has been in tight spots before, but this is the closest we have ever been to the lights going out for good.

We know NI needs to adapt to survive — from bolder marketing to transforming our digital presence — but as we make changes behind the scenes, we need an injection of cash to ensure we survive to see tomorrow.
The £150,000 we raise will not only save New Internationalist from immediate closure, but also help us to:
Most importantly, the money raised will give us the space and time to regroup, rebuild and become more sustainable.
New Internationalist was founded in 1973 to give an alternative perspective to the narrow representation of the Majority World in the mainstream media. Since then NI has always been one step ahead, from exposing the Nestlé baby milk scandal in the 1970’s to early warnings about climate breakdown and tech monopolies.
Today our global network of journalists continue to report from places and struggles too often ignored by mainstream media – from Gaza to Congo to Sudan – while amplifying movements fighting for justice around the world.
Reader-owned, co-operatively run and fiercely independent – together we can create the media we want to see in the world.
Don’t let another light go out!
