-------------

RepresentAsian: An Evening of Asian Talent was founded by Ben Armstrong in 2021, in the hopes of creating more access to professional opportunities, breaking down certain stigmas and stereotypes, and providing inclusive opportunities for Asian artists in the theatrical sector.

Armstrong was disheartened by the lack of Asian representation and diversity in theatre, both on and off stage. Since then, there have been six sold-out iterations of RepresentAsian at the Phoenix Arts Club in London and we are now recognised throughout the industry for being boundary-breakers for the Asian community who continue to spark change, inspire, educate and provide accessible opportunities.

‘You have to see it, to be it.’

This iteration of RepresentAsian is bigger than ever, taking place in London’s West End: a gala-style concert, featuring a line-up of Asian performers from across the globe, ranging from graduates, seasoned West End artists and a Tony-nominated actor. The night will include a varied mixture of solo and group performances, with a live four-piece band, and an engaging dialogue throughout, by the host; with stars such as Conrad Ricamora (Oh, Mary!, How to Get Away with Murder), Nina Wadia (EastEnders) and Desmonda Cathabel (Hadestown, Aladdin) with more to be announced.

We make an impact by supporting from the ground up, from day one - we have partnered with The Boury Academy, a non profit organization founded by Rakesh Boury (Matilda the Musical, The Creakers) with the aim to eliminate barriers to the performing arts, and make young people feel represented, valued and empowered through accessible training in ballet, tap, street dance, one-to-one singing lessons and annual performance opportunities.

The RepresentAsian Award is a scholarship that will be awarded to an Asian student from an under-privileged background, funding one-year of tuition and equipment costs at The Boury Academy, and a one-year Spotlight membership for the young student. We have also partnered with Aixa Amarante Productions (producer and general manager) and the House of Kais (head of sponsorships) - a full global majority team at the forefront.

Ben Armstrong states: “Representation matters a great deal to me, as a mixed race Sri Lankan individual, and I want to give back to the Asian community. Providing access and opportunities to young people is how to widen the talent pool, strengthen representation and hopefully inspire others to commit to inclusivity and diversity in the arts. I can’t wait to share this show with a West End audience.”

This Crowdfunder has been set up to cover partial production costs to ensure RepresentAsian gets to the stage this Autumn. We thank you for your belief and support for a more accessible, diverse and inclusive industry!
